The Barcelona terrorist attack in a nutshell

Police picture of suspect who hired the van used in the attack
A white van drove into crowds in the busy tourist area of Las Ramblas in central Barcelona on Thursday. The attack killed 13 and left at least 100 injured, 15 seriously.  Another car ramming attack happened in Cambrils, a town 100km south-west of Barcelona, early on Friday. Police killed five attackers, who were said to have explosive belts. Seven people, including a police officer, were injured in Cambrils, one critically and two seriously. Both attacks linked to explosion at a house in Alcanar early on Thursday in which one person died. Police believe Alcanar residence was being used to prepare bombs. The self-titled Islamic State group (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the Barcelona attack. Dead and injured include citizens from France, Germany, Pakistan and the Philippines. Police have arrested a Barcelona attack suspect in Ripoll, 90km north of Barcelona. It comes after officers arrested two other men on Thursday, another in Ripoll and the other in Alcanar. A statement just released says 26 French citizens were among the scores of people injured in the Barcelona attack. The French foreign ministry says 11 of the 26 are in a serious condition. Meanwhile Spanish media have reported that several people have been shot dead in Cambrils where police had launched a counter-terror operation. Police confirmed that they had killed the perpetrators of a "terrorist attack" in the coastal town 120km from Barcelona
